To take advantage of a panoramic view, this home's main living areas are located on the second floor. That arrangement put the master bedroom on the ground level, directly in line with the view from the front entry. A fireplace provided an innovative design solution. Located in a corner of the bedroom instead of along the wall, the fireplace serves both spaces, breaking up the angles of the necessarily long and narrow hallway. "I wanted to give the hallway a focal point," architect Mark English explains, "I wanted a view to the master bedroom but not have it say 'bedroom.' It's the best of

both worlds: Corner positioning of the master-bedroom fireplace lets the client enjoy its sculptural curves from the bedroom as well as from the long entry hall. A simple maple mantel helps define the shape of the surround as it adds the warmth of a wood-toned accent. The curved maple shelf in the hall repeats the mantel's gentle arc.
