A Victorian Feel by Elena Luraghi When this house, in a Victorian-style block in the Noe Valley on the outskirts of San Francisco, was almost completely gutted by fire, it was decided to renovate the exterior and redesign the interior from scratch. The result is a successful blend of old and new: a daring longitudinal plan and a variety of materials and textures: the cold feel of stainless steel, sheet aluminium, mirrors and glazing contrasts with the warmth of maple (the furniture and floors), the granite detailing and the pastel-coloured plasterwork. The end section of the wall between the second-floor bathroom and the master bedroom makes effective use of colour. A faux beam coloured blue (matching the towels) enhances the simplicity of the furnishings and surfacing materials: ice-white walls (plastered or tiled); chrome-plated accessories and maple furniture. |
